Dua is a spiritual practice whereby individuals invoke blessings, long life, happiness, and relief from adversity for themselves or others. It often involves specific physical gestures, such as in Islamic tradition, where practitioners may raise their hands to their faces while reciting prayers.

Dua is a fundamental element across all religions, rooted in ancient beliefs regarding the magical power of words and the ability to engage divine forces through them. The language in which one performs dua is not of primary importance; however, Islamic teachings suggest that if one can articulate the prayers correctly and understands their meaning, performing dua in Arabic is preferable.

There are two distinct types of dua. The first type is known as "ma’sura," which consists of prayers explicitly defined in religious texts such as the Qur'an and Hadith. These should be recited exactly as prescribed, without alteration. The second type is termed "muhtaraa," which allows for a more personalized expression of supplication, permitting individuals to compose their own prayers freely. This category may also include pleas directed toward idols and false deities.

According to Islamic belief, requests for offspring, healing, protection from misfortunes, and assistance in times of need are to be made solely to Allah. Seeking these from others is regarded as shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr (disbelief).
